2022 Fishing Guide Calendar

Fishing is a interesting sport, and Florida is a delightful place to get out on the water and find some truly great fish species. From Orlando to the Florida Keys, with the right fishing charter boat and the right fishing spot, you can find nearly anything in the waters of Florida. And knowing what fish you might catch in what month can help you decide when you want to go on a fishing trip.

Check out the calendar below and see what you fish you can catch for the month.

Amberjack - the largest fish of the Carrangidae family (which includes Jacks and Trevallies) and are widely targeted for their hard fighting game qualities. Big and powerful, these fish strike fast, pull hard and do deep and forceful dives to the bottom.

Barracuda - Fast and ferocious, the Great Barracuda is a true predator of the seas. With its huge gape and sharp teeth, it's able to feed on larger prey by chopping it in half. With low food value, 'cudas are normally caught for trophy purposes or as bycatch.

Bonito - Often mistakenly called "Bonita" (probably with the name of Bonita Springs in mind) and mixed up with their bulkier doppelganger Little Tunny, Bonito are on the smaller side, often caught as bait for larger fish.

Cobia - this species are very popular game fish, present in great numbers throughout the Florida coastline. Strong and hard-fighting, they are prone to long and powerful runs with occasional aerials and are infamous for keeping up the battle even after being boated. These fish don't give up until they've lost every ounce of energy.

Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) - They are very fast swimmers (more than 50mph), but, luckily, not the brightest fish in the sea. They are drawn to floating objects (buoys, seaweed, logs etc.) and, if caught in the middle of a feeding frenzy, will get hooked onto anything dropped in the water (even a piece of cloth).

Kingfish - this species of Mackerel is sought out in sportfishing for its powerful short runs and, sometimes, spectacular aerial displays. It's also a popular commercial catch, highly abundant and easily reachable off the Florida coast.

Blue Marlin - is a prime deep sea game fish, often the target of specialist charters. It can get very large (with the current all-tackle record standing tall at 1,402lbs), yet still pull off impressive acrobatic stunts at the end of the line, making it a highly desirable and rewarding target. Blue Marlin weighing over 1000 lbs, also known as 'granders', are on the bucket list of every serious big game angler.

Redfish - the most popular inshore and nearshore game in the US, abundant in Gulf and Atlantic waters. They are strong and hard fighting fish, with fierce short and fast runs for which previous fishing experience comes in handy.

Blacktip Shark - excellent light tackle fighter, popular among anglers due to being accessible to target in inshore and nearshore waters. The species inhabits warm and shallow waters, mostly up to 100ft, and can be found over coral reef drop-offs, in mangrove swamps and lagoons, muddy bays, but brackish estuarine environments as well.

Mangrove Snapper - this species is the most abundant Snapper accessible to Florida anglers, popular for being good game and table fare. It's effectively farmed and is a common commercial aquarium dweller.

Snook - Otherwise known as Robalo, Snook are some of America's favorite inshore game fish. They're easy enough to find, but take some finesse to bag. Practice pays off though, as these fish are highly appreciated table fare.

Swordfish - The blazing fast, flat-billed Swordfish are considered by many anglers to be the ultimate big game challenge. They are vicious fighters with a weapon to match and be wary of, as their frantic head shakes and attempts at impaling don't stop until the very last second.

Tarpon - is a majestic creature, highly sought after for its strength, stubbornness and spectacular acrobatic moves, which are often comprised of up to 10' leaps and violent body shakes aimed at release from your hook.

Tripletail - This is a semi-migratory, usually solitary swimming, pelagic fish that's fairly widespread throughout the world, but somewhat scarce in numbers. It's not commonly fished for recreationally, but is also caught and marketed in decent quantities commercially.

Blackfin Tuna - The species is considered to be one of the toughest light tackle fish, with flesh quality comparable to that of the Yellowfin. What the Blackfin lose in size, they make up in numbers and willingness to bite.

Yellowfin Tuna - Yellowfin, or Ahi, Tuna, are some of the most highly appraised big game catches of the world. They are beautiful, hard-fighting fish that just about push the limits of what a single angler is able to reel in. The incentive is there, because winning the battle means a sushi feast afterwards.

Wahoo - They are pelagic and mostly solitary, sometimes swimming in small groups of 2-6. Even though they are appreciated as food, they are usually hooked while targeting other species, with rare organized commercial fisheries. Wahoo are sometimes referred to as "the favorite bycatch" in big game fishing.
